Homemade Raw Dog Treat Recipe Ideas

Homemade Raw Dog Treat Recipe Ideas

If you are looking for a cheaper, healthier or more personalised alternative to shop-bought raw food dog treats, why not try making your own? This way, you can create something that your dog will love being rewarded with and you can ensure there is complete consistency throughout their raw food diet. Here are some ideas:

Organ Meat Treats

Organ meat makes up about 15% of your dog’s BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) Diet, and you can incorporate it with the treats you give them. Full of nutrients, you can be assured that these treats are healthy. You can use any organ meat you want, heart, kidneys, lung or liver, and there are two different ways you can create organ meat treats, depending on the kind of texture you want.

For the biscuit-like texture:
  1. Preheat your oven on the lowest setting.
  2. Dice your chosen organ meat into 2-inch chunks and cook in boiling water for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Drain and dice again into smaller pieces, and place onto a lined baking tray.
  4. Place the baking tray into the preheated oven and dry the organ meat for 2-4 hours.
  5. If you can snap them in half, this means there is no moisture left and they are ready.
For the crispy, jerky-like texture:
  1. Preheat your oven on the lowest setting.
  2. Thinly slice your organ meat – the thinner the better.
  3. Place the slices onto a lined baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 12-14 hours.
  4. If you can snap them in half, this means there is no moisture left and they are ready. These will also have a darker colour to them.

Meat Flavoured Cookies

This recipe only has three ingredients which means it is cheap for you whilst providing nutritional value for your dog. Quick, easy and simple, by only using flour, liver and eggs, you can create a yummy treat for your beloved pet.

  • 60g Whole Wheat Flour
  • 2 Eggs
  • 190g Beef Liver
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°C / Gas Mark 4.
  2. Finely chop the beef liver and mix together with the flour and eggs until smooth.
  3. Spread evenly on a lined baking tray.
  4. Bake for 15 mins and allow to cool.
  5. Cut into shapes and store in a sealed container in the fridge.

Chicken Broth and Apple Treats

Perfect for the summer, these treats will keep your pet cool whilst also providing nutrition. They are a cost-effective alternative to shop-bought treats as they only contain two ingredients and can be kept in your freezer for a long period of time.

  1. Make your chicken stock following the instructions on the packet.
  2. Core your apples and chop them into small pieces.
  3. Evenly distribute the apples across your ice cube tray.
  4. Fill each ice cube portion with chicken stock and freeze.

These are just some simple ideas to offer alternatives to convenient shop-bought options and to get you cooking in the kitchen for your dog instead.
